This piece considers whether and how our destiny is bound by external influences, and whether our passion can override the fate foretold in the hands we’re dealt.

I was biking in my neighborhood when I heard some crows causing a commotion. This usually means there’s something interesting going on, such as when they gang up on a raptor, so I turned down an alley to get closer to them. I saw three very loud crows sitting on the pavement but no evidence of what upset them. There was a two of spades playing card on the ground near them. Spades equate to swords in a tarot deck, so the idea that the crows were going nuts over a card that can mean sudden and unexpected change was kind of spooky. This got me thinking about how a more superstitious person might have experienced this event, and more broadly, how a person’s beliefs directly influence their life.
