I made this painting for the 2022 Bike Winter Art Show. I’ve been bike commuting since about 1998. That was before cell phones, which have made biking way more dangerous and scary. The pandemic also contributed to a new sense of entitlement among drivers. People could control these factors but choose not to, and that weighs heavily on us cyclists.
This painting represents the meditative moments before a bicyclist gets on the saddle. We need to have fast reflexes and respond quickly to unpredictable drivers. But we also need to stay calm and aware. All of the parts of our bikes need to work in unison to get us where we’re going and keep us safe. It’s magical.
Please put the phone down while you’re driving, and let’s all be considerate and share the road. Thanks.
