Sirens weren’t originally described as the beautiful women you see in today’s cultural references. The earliest descriptions are of a creature with a women’s head and a bird’s body. Over the years sirens became interchangeable with mermaids, and this mythology intertwined with the concept of women as beautiful, evil temptresses. I find the earlier version to be more true. In this dyptich, two sirens sing with an empty ship in the background.
