The inspiration for this painting was a couple of paper airplanes that I found near the elementary school by our house. Finding them made me happy – I could imagine the kids who made them laughing and showing off their paper airplane-making skills. Of course, the apparent simplicity of these toys belies the fact that they are affected by profound natural forces. Aren’t we a lot like paper airplanes? In this painting, the little paper airplanes defy the power of gravity as they create their own air currents and vortices, maybe missing their goal but having fun anyway.
