This painting was inspired by my love for cicadas. The white shape was the rough-in for a more detailed drawing but it captured the subject’s essence so well that I decided not to add more detail. The background design was made by arranging pencil shavings into rings and setting them on fire, creating scorched circles. The rings represent the earth from which the cicadas emerge after spending the vast majority of their lives – 13 years – underground. The white and black shapes represent their short lives in the sun.
